Two Arrested in Entering Auto Incidents

Crisp County, GA

On April 24, 2026, at approximately 7:00 a.m., deputies with the Crisp County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of individuals entering vehicles at 2104 US Highway 280 West.

Upon arrival, deputies made contact with a suspect identified as James Cumbus, who was detained after being observed by a resident looking into vehicles and attempting to flee the area. During the investigation, multiple victims reported items missing from their unlocked vehicles, including a flashlight and a vehicle computer. Some of the stolen property was later recovered nearby.

During the incident, a second individual initially provided false identifying information to deputies before being identified as Joseph Smith. Smith was found to have an outstanding warrant through the Cordele Police Department.

Joseph Smith, a 32-year-old male from Pitts, Ga, was arrested on his outstanding warrant and is also charged with:

· 4 Counts – Entering Automobile or Other Motor Vehicle with Intent to Commit Theft or Felony

· Obstructing or Hindering Law Enforcement Officers

· Giving False Name, Address, or Birthdate to Law Enforcement Officer

James Cumbus, a 39-year-old male from Vienna, Ga, was arrested and charged with:

· 4 Counts – Party to Crime

The Crisp County Sheriff’s Office reminds residents to always lock their vehicles and remove valuables to help prevent crimes of opportunity.
