DEATH OF FEDERAL INMATE

CRISP COUNTY- July 17, 2017

July 16, 2017 at approximately 9:10 am a 34-year old male federal inmate was found unresponsive in Crisp County’s Detention Center. “Corrections Officers responded to the cell after receiving calls from fellow inmates, and found the inmate hanging in his cell,” said Sheriff Hancock. The inmate was cut down immediately, and officers initiated CPR.

Fire Rescue personnel from Station One were on the scene within three minutes of the call. Paramedics then transported the male from Crisp County Detention Center to Crisp Regional Hospital. “The inmate was later pronounced in the emergency room of the hospital,” said Sheriff Hancock.

Crisp County Sheriff’s Office cannot release the name of the male due to his status as a federal inmate. Investigators from both the Georgia Bureau of Investigations and the United States Marshal Service responded to the Detention Center to investigate the death. “It is customary to have Georgia Bureau of Investigations to investigate all in custody deaths at the Detention Center,” said Sheriff Hancock. If any additional information is needed, please contact the United States Marshal Office Albany Division.

“It is tragic anytime someone takes their own life, and our thoughts and prayers are with the family during this time,” said Hancock
