CCSO Deputy Receives 2022 Governor’s Public Safety Award

Crisp County Sheriff's Office is incredibly proud to announce that Deputy Brian Curp received the Act of Heroism Award at the 2022 Governor's Public Safety Awards Ceremony. Deputy Curp was nominated for exhibiting exceptional courage, regardless of personal safety, in an attempt to save or protect human life.
On Sunday, October 3, 2021, Deputy Curp responded to GA 401/I-75 after Crisp County E-911 reported multiple 911 calls about a man with a handgun shooting at a car on I-75 near mile marker 91 in Crisp County. The subject also assaulted and robbed a passerby who stopped to assist him. Deputy Curp encountered the subject walking along the interstate in and out of traffic, causing a traffic jam. He attempted to talk to the subject to determine what was going on. The subject then fired at him with a handgun. He returned fire, striking the subject. No officers were injured during this incident. Deputy Curp displayed extraordinary heroism at the imminent personal hazard of life in the exceptional performance of Law Enforcement Duty.
The Governor's Public Safety Awards Program (GPSA) was initiated in 1998 in order to provide an opportunity for the men and women in the public safety family to be recognized for outstanding service to their communities and contributions to their profession.
As per former Governor Zell Miller, who established these awards, "While we have appropriately honored those who have fallen, I would like to establish an organization that would also honor those who by virtue of their personal integrity and determination make public safety the respectable and necessary profession it is." Governor Brian Kemp has committed to the continuation of the GPSA program.
