SECURITY HEIGHTENED AT CCDC AFTER A SMALL ELECTRICAL FIRE REPORTED IN CELL

CRISP COUNTY- December 28, 2018

Crisp County Fire Rescue responded to the Crisp County Detention Center at approximately 7:00 a.m. on Friday, December 28, 2018. E911 dispatched them to a possible electrical fire in a cell. The Control Room Operator ceased power to all electrical outlets and placed the facility on lockdown. Detention Officers were able to extinguish the small fire before Crisp County Fire Rescue arrived. Sheriff Billy Hancock requested the assistance of Captain Marty Black, Origin and Cause Investigator with Crisp County Fire Rescue and the State Fire Marshal to determine the exact cause. No injuries were reported. Crisp County Fire Rescue left the scene at approximately 7:40 a.m.

The devices pictured were found in the Detention Center. Inmates insert these devices into the electrical outlets to heat products they purchase from the commissary. The investigation continues to determine if arson charges will be issued.

Sheriff Hancock stated, “The actions of these inmates put the general jail population and Sheriff’s Office personnel at risk. I am extremely proud of my staff and their quick response this morning.”
